Febrile seizures occur in 3% to 5% of healthy children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years, triggered by a rapid spike in body temperature. Although visually alarming, simple febrile seizures are self-limiting and do not cause intellectual impairment or brain damage.
Immediate First-Aid: What You MUST Do
- Turn the child onto their side (Recovery Position): This keeps the airway open and prevents choking on saliva or vomit.
- Clear the surrounding area: Remove hard or sharp objects to prevent physical injury.
- Time the seizure: Note the exact start time. If it lasts longer than 5 minutes, call emergency services immediately.
What You Should NEVER Do
Never hold the child down or restrain their movements. Never place your fingers, a spoon, or water into the child's mouth during a convulsion—this can break teeth or obstruct breathing.
When Does a Seizure Need Advanced Neurological Evaluation?
A seizure that lasts over 15 minutes, involves only one side of the body (focal seizure), or recurs within 24 hours is classified as a 'complex febrile seizure'. These cases warrant pediatric neurological assessment, EEG, and neuroimaging.
Doctor's Clinical Insight: "Remaining calm, placing your child in the lateral recovery position, and seeking medical evaluation immediately after the seizure terminates are the three best steps a parent can take." — Dr. D Bhanu Prakash, MD, DM
