Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD), caused predominantly by Coxsackievirus A16 and Enterovirus 71, spreads rapidly through preschools and daycares. While generally harmless and self-resolving in 7 to 10 days, mouth ulcers can be severely painful, leading to food and fluid refusal.
Symptoms and Progression
HFMD typically begins with a low-grade fever and sore throat. Within 48 hours, tiny red spots turn into painful ulcers on the tongue and inside of the cheeks, followed by non-itchy red blisters on the palms, soles of the feet, and diaper area.
Soothing Diet for Painful Mouth Ulcers
Offer cold, soft, non-acidic foods: chilled milk, yogurt, fruit popsicles, tender coconut water, and ice cream. Avoid citrus juices, salty crisps, and spicy foods that cause stinging pain.
When Can Your Child Return to School?
Keep your child home until the fever has completely resolved for 24 hours and all blisters have dried and crusted over, typically 7 to 10 days from onset.
Doctor's Clinical Insight: "The biggest danger with HFMD is dehydration from mouth pain. Focus on cold fluids and pain-relieving oral sprays rather than worrying about solid meals." — Dr. S. Karimunnisa, MD
