Allergic conditions in children range from allergic rhinitis and eczema to life-threatening anaphylactic shock. As childhood food allergies (milk, eggs, nuts, soy) rise, parents and teachers must be equipped with quick-action rescue protocols.
Recognizing Anaphylaxis: A Multi-System Reaction
Anaphylaxis involves two or more body systems: hives/swelling on skin, sudden wheezing or throat tightness, vomiting/abdominal cramps, and hypotension or dizziness. It requires immediate intramuscular epinephrine (adrenaline).
The Golden Rule of Epinephrine (EpiPen)
Give epinephrine in the outer mid-thigh at the earliest suspicion of anaphylaxis. Antihistamines and inhalers treat symptoms, but ONLY epinephrine reverses airway collapse and restores blood pressure.
Doctor's Clinical Insight: "Always carry two auto-injectors if your child has a known severe allergy, and ensure schools have written anaphylaxis care plans on file." — Dr. S. Karimunnisa, MD
